Allison Wessels George (A.W.G.) Champion (1893-1975) was a trade unionist, political activist, civic leader, and businessman who had a farm in Inanda. His original surname was Mhlongo. As an outspoken  campaigner for racial equality, he was elected to the Native Representative Council (NRC) in 1942 and later became president-general of the ANC (1946-47), apart from occupied several positions in various other political organisations.
